If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, there are multiple ways to alleviate the symptoms of this potentially life-threatening condition and significantly reduce symptoms for a healthier night’s sleep.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common options:

— The CPAP device is one of the more commonly prescribed treatments for sleep apnea. It is an at-home treatment designed to generate a steady stream of pressurized air through a hose and facial mask while you are sleeping. When you place the mask overyour nose and mouth it can open your air passageways wider and help you breathe better. While it can be effective, patients with a CPAP device sometimes do not like to use the machine, or they feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic due to the mask.

— Oral surgery may be recommended in some cases of sleep apnea, especially if other, less invasive methods have not had significant success. Oral surgery for this condition typically involves an operation on the soft palate, tongue, and/or other areas to allow a more positive flow of air through the airways while sleeping.

— An oral appliance can be a very comfortable solution for treating your sleep apnea and opening up your breathing passages. Our dentists in Eureka believe this to be one of the best treatment options for many of our patients. Once you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, Dr. Mike Menolascino or Dr. Eric Klumb can evaluate your needs and determine if an oral appliance is the right treatment solution for you. Our oral appliances are custom-designed for each patient, which often provides an effective treatment along with a more natural fit. Many of our patients prefer the device over surgery and or a CPAP device due to its convenience and comfort.

Remember, if you or a loved one suspects you have sleep apnea, it is very important to have an evaluation as soon as possible. Treatment can help improve your condition before it leads to serious health consequences.
